The IPTV company DirecTV has struck a deal with the Current Group that will result in the availability of broadband being delivered over phone lines.

Consumers will be able to a buy a package that provides phone services, TV and high-speed broadband in one deal.

The Current Group is currently the largest broadband-over-powerline (BPL) company in the US.

Naqi Jaffery, president of the research firm Telecom Trends International, told the news site Red Herring: "The impact of this deal initially will be in the validation of BPL by a market leader such as DirecTV, not so much in terms of coverage."

DirecTV has not said what kind of packages will be available and has given no information yet regarding pricing.

However, it is expected that packages will be rolled out by the end of the current year.

DirecTV is based in El Segundo and is controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation
